Let’s raise funds for a wellbeing garden in Critical Care

Together, we can provide a wellbeing garden for patients, visitors and staff in critical care – because everybody deserves fresh air.

Please donate today to support the future Critical Care Unit in the new BEACH Building at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

These patients are typically higher risk surgical patients or emergency cases requiring a form of life support and may stay on the unit for multiple months.

The Critical Care unit is a difficult experience for patients and their families, and an intensive working environment for staff. In fact, patients, staff, and visitors do not experience fresh air as the unit is air conditioned for infection control.

Each year, there are approximately 1,450 patients in critical care. And in 2025, the new BEACH building will open a 30-bed critical care unit, making it one of the largest in the country.

We are fundraising to transform a 200m2 balcony into a garden to enable everyone to experience fresh air and natural light. The space will be shared to benefit staff who need to remain close to the unit on their breaks while allowing privacy and a break of nature for patients and their visitors.

The patient wellbeing garden needs:

  • Smooth flooring and power sockets to enable patients to remain in their beds and connected to life support whilst enjoying the garden.
  • Flowers and plants, complemented by artwork to conceal hospital concrete.
  • Ample space and comfortable furniture for family members visiting their loved ones.

The staff garden needs:

  • Comfortable outdoor furniture and greenery for staff to unwind before the second half of their 12-hour shift.
  • A soundproof divide to separate areas for privacy and a break away.

Please help us to provide a special space to aid the emotional wellbeing of everybody in this unit. A garden to take patients outside to support their recovery and rehabilitation would be invaluable. And to provide relatives with a space to reflect near their loved one will make such a difference. Having a place in reach for staff to relax on their breaks in the fresh air is also very restorative.”
